Spotify - Developper Application
London, 6th June 2019
1. Background
This document aims to provide some additional details about TRIBAM, a product designed and launched by Arch Ventures Ltd.
The information provided below is for the exclusive use of Spotify, is deemed Confidential, and shall not be shared with any 3rd party (and only shared internally on a need to know basis).
Commercial Use ?
Also - even though we are not sure that TRIBAM meets the “Commercial Use” criteria as defined in your Terms and Conditions, we still wanted to provide you below with as much details as we can about our App and the way we will work with Spotify, in the spirit of transparency and partnership.
Indeed, we do not believe that TRIBAM meets the “Commercial Use” criteria given that:
TRIBAM does not constitute a “Streaming SDA”: Users are not able to play songs from within TRIBAM but are just taken to their Spotify App to listen to any music (see user flow details below)
TRIBAM is free for all users, with no cost upfront, not subscription and not ads. Our objective is to build a great tool for our Users and a high quality community
At a later stage (if ever, and timing uncertain), we may decide to enter into “affiliate” relationships for some of the other categories (hotels, restaurants,…) which may then provide some monetisation. Similarly, we may offer certain additional services to our Users which would be based on a subscription. But the occurence and timing of those changes are uncertain at this stage and we will keep Spotify updated of those changes as relevant to Spotify
2. Introduction to TRIBAM
TRIBAM is a mobile application (iOS, Android and eventually web) allowing anyone to share and access recommendations they can trust.
Categories for the recommendations on TRIBAM cover most aspects of one’s personal life. Initially, TRIBAM includes:
- Hotels
- Restaurants and Cafes
- Books
- Music
- Movies
Trust is the north star of TRIBAM – and a differentiator compared to most existing social networks / social recommendations services in the market.
Trust is achieved by given the User the control over the source of recommendations they access: i.e. their friends and family, people they actually know. Therefore people whose tastes they are able to assess easily and who they know are not conflicted (vs influencers / micro-influencers / paid marketers…).
3. User Flow and Integration with Spotify:
With TRIBAM, Users connect to people they know, and share Recommendations with those. Recommendations include Music.
We describe below the main User Flow relevant for Music (and therefore the integration with Spotify). We also include a video showing the current version of the Prototype (password: tribam).
Please note that this prototype is only meant to be a working tool for us: to that extent, it may not yet meet all the Brand Guidelines required for Spotify (and the other providers). Those Guidelines will be fully implemented in the App itself).
+ Activity Feed:
When opening TRIBAM, a User sees his/her Activity Feed: Recommendations made by his connections, across categories, time ordered.
For the Recommendations which are Music tracks, the User is able to tap the “Listen through Spotify” button:
Doing so takes the User out of the TRIBAM App and opens the standard Spotify App.
The User is then able to listen and interact with the track on the Spotify App as standard on that App.
+ Recommendation Card:
When tapping on a Recommendation from the Activity Feed (or through the Search option in TRIBAM) the User is taken to the Recommendation Card: a screen which provides the details of the item Recommended.
In the case of a Music Track Recommended:
the artwork
name of the track
name of the artist
and then the TRIBAM specific information:
rating (the rockets)
who recommended it
Comments and Private Notes
On that screen, we have the same link as earlier: “Listen through Spotify”. Tapping the link has the same effect as earlier:
Doing so takes the User out of the TRIBAM App and opens the standard Spotify App.
The User is then able to listen and interact with the track on the Spotify App as standard on that App.
+ Posting a new Recommendation:
Finally, the User is also able to post his/her own recommendations on TRIBAM, including for Music.
Having selected the Music category in the Search tab, the User enters the words (title and / or artist) for the track to be recommended.
The search is using the Spotify information to identify the matching track and return the basic information mentioned above (track name, artist name, album, artwork…).
The video on the left, based on the prototype we are using as the basis to code the app, illustrates the flows above in more details.
